Jetbrain phpstorm11/13/2022 ![]() Every time I try to use it feels like the time I'm wasting figuring out how something works, I could've just spent to open the file in Rider/whatever and be done with it.įor me personally: I decided to cancel my jetbrains subscription for 1 year to give vscode a proper go. The thing is, there's a bunch of people like me - who hate vscode because for me it's simply a Notepad with extra steps. Not a feature every project needs, but especially the more complex ones with more than one developer benefit a lot from it. It can give you a great overview of which code is tightly coupled and how different things are used across the project. A lot of the times it’s really helpful when making structural decisions about your code base. It’s a really great thing to have in more complex projects. Hit the button, run your tests and, usually, everything is fine. Minor refactorings like this just aren’t something you have to think about because your IDE does it for you. I’m not saying you can’t make it work without those features but they do speed up the development process immensely and also reduce the mental load quite substantially. This can be a ton of work in many circumstances. Most of the time everything just works fine after a move, whereas with manually copy/pasting there’s way more to do to make things work.Īnd as for signatures, I’m not sure what your copy/paste workflow there is? For example to rename a function parameter you’ve got to first find every call to that function and then go and replace it there. It also tracks and adjusts other dependencies which sometimes can be a lot of struggle to get right if things get more complex. Not really though? Moving for example does a lot more than simply taking one piece of code and putting it into a different file. The rest is pretty quick with cut and paste.
